About

Fair Trade Music connects musicians, venues, and fans to promote a healthy music business—one that pays musicians fair wages.

We certify that venues have “Fair Trade Music” when they pay wages and benefits that are fair to both the musicians and the venue–that respect the livelihood of the performers, yet don’t put the venue out of business.

In contrast, many clubs reap substantial profit from bands drawing in hundreds of paying customers, but pay little or nothing. At the same time, bands are expected to do all their own promotion and bring in the club’s audience–work formerly reserved for the music venues.

Understandably, most fans are unaware of the economic issues their favorite performers face. They’re even less likely to know about which venues treat musicians with respect, and which are slowly chipping away at the foundation of the music business.

That’s where Fair Trade Music comes in. By patronizing clubs in our growing network of Fair Trade Music venues, fans will know that their favorite bands are treated with respect and fairness. And clubs that help—not hurt—their local music scene are supported by passionate, dedicated fans.

Founded in Portland, OR, Fair Trade music is opening new chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Get involved today!
